About LiftMaster
LiftMaster is one of the highest consumer-rated garage door opener manufacturers in the industry. LiftMaster garage door openers were originally engineered for commercial applications, and when the company moved into the residential side of the industry, it kept that commercial-grade engineering and quality. That decision is a big reason LiftMaster openers have a reputation for durability and reliability.
The LiftMaster opener’s metal head unit cover, steel 1-piece fabricated rail and trolley component hold up better than the plastic head units and multi-piece aluminum rails found on many other brands. LiftMaster is a 5-star product, and as an authorized dealer we are glad to help you pick the right model and have GSP install one for you.
When the Power Goes Out
Houston storms knock out power often enough that it pays to know what your opener will do. If you have a LiftMaster opener with battery backup, it will keep opening and closing the door for a while on battery power. LiftMaster says the battery supplies up to 24 hours of operation during an outage, but that is also based on usage. It is not recommended to continue normal usage during a power failure or power outage. Battery backup is intended to provide usage to get out of an emergency situation. On battery the opener runs slower, and some features such as the lights, Timer-to-Close and closing the door from the myQ app pause until power comes back.
If your opener does not have battery backup, or the battery has run down, you can open the door by hand with the manual release. On all LiftMaster garage door openers there is the red manual release cord hanging. The purpose of this release cord is to allow you to disengage the garage door from the garage door opener to attempt to raise or lower the door by hand.
- Use the manual release with the door closed if possible.
- Be very careful if you think a spring is broken. A door with a broken spring is extremely heavy and can drop fast once it is released, so keep everyone clear and call us instead of forcing it.
- Never use the release cord or handle to pull the door up or down.
For step-by-step help, read our guide on how to manually release and re-engage your garage door opener. If the door still will not close once the power is back, the safety sensors are a common cause, so check the photo eyes first.
Tip: Test Your Battery Backup Once a Year
LiftMaster recommends testing the battery backup every year. Unplug the opener from the outlet, then open and close the door with your remote or wall control. It should run on battery power, just slower than normal, and some features like the lights and Timer-to-Close will pause. Plug the opener back in when you are done. If the door does not move on battery, the battery may need to be replaced, and we can help with that.
